October 2013 Sanctions Hit the Homeless Hardest

31 per cent of homeless jobseekers have been sanctioned, compared to 3 per cent of other claimants, according to a new report by Homeless Link.

The findings from their survey of homelessness services reveals that homeless claimants are being disproportionately affected by sanctions.
In addition to the key finding, the research also highlights that nearly a third of services report homeless people being sanctioned while facing poor mental health, learning difficulties or substance misuse problems.
Homeless Link has called on the DWP to increase the flexibility of the claimant commitment to accommodate those who are furthest from the job market and need more support.
