June 2015 New Welfare Bill Announced

A new Full Employment and Welfare Benefits Bill has been introduced in the Queens Speech.

The government says that the Bill will ensure that it pays to work rather than to rely on benefits and deliver fairness to the taxpayer while continuing to provide support for those in greatest need.

The main elements include

The main rates of the majority of working age benefits, tax credits and child benefit to be frozen for two years from 2016/2017. However, pensioners will be protected

Lowering the benefit cap from £26,000 to £23,000

A new youth allowance for 18 to 21 year olds including stronger work related conditionality from day one, and after six months claimants will be required to go on an apprenticeship, training or community work placement

Removal of automatic entitlement to housing support for 18 to 21 year olds
