June 2014 Making Claimants Accept Zero Hours Contracts

Employment Minister Esther McVey has confirmed that universal credit claimants can be mandated to apply for zero hours contracts.

Ms McVey has stated that while the government does not consider zero hours contracts to be, by default, unsuitable jobs - jobseeker's allowance (JSA) claimants are not currently mandated to apply for them.

However, the argument now is that since Universal credit is payable when people are in work as well as out of work the need to reclaim when earnings fluctuate is removed. As a result, universal credit coaches can mandate to zero hours contracts.
