July 2015 Employment Support Allowance Overhaul on the Cards

According to a report published by the BBC the DWP is considering the abolition of the employment and support allowance (ESA) work-related activity group (WRAG).

The BBC says that it has seen a government document which describes ESA as a passive benefit which does not incentivise people to find a job, and proposes abolishing the WRAG and the associated work-related activity component (currently £29.05 per week), bringing payments for that group in line with jobseekers allowance and saving hundreds of millions of pounds by the end of the decade.

The paper also proposes renaming the work capability assessment as an employment capability assessment - which would be carried out much sooner in the application process.

It is possible that Ministers are also considering changes to the support group of ESA - look out for a possible announcement in next weeks Budget
